Find Your Calling: Jack Nelson uses classes to explore medicine and the arts

At Hill-Murray, we strive to help our students find their calling, whatever it may be. From daily classes, athletics, clubs, and programs to other student-led initiatives, our students are discovering their paths each day. Through our new campaign called Find Your Calling, we get to know our Pioneers and discover what inspires them.

Jack Nelson, Grade 12

What subjects are you most interested in?

Medicine, Choir, and Theatre

Does Hill-Murray help you explore those interests?

Not only has Hill-Murray helped me explore my interests, but they have helped me discover my passions. My love for medicine started in Mrs. Grau-Stumpf’s Honors Biology class, and it has only further blossomed after taking Honor’s Chemistry with Ms. Faith Murphy and CIS Anatomy & Physiology with Mrs. Serene Deuth. After my anatomy class, I often go to choir class with Ms. Therese Walth, where I rediscover my passion for singing. After school, I get to go and enjoy performing the arts under the direction of Mr. Ben Bakken. All of these teachers not only love what they teach but have a passion and knowledge that they share with their students.

Are you involved in any athletics or extracurricular activities? What do you enjoy about these opportunities?

I am involved in Theatre, HMStudents4Change, and Student Council. I love being a part of the arts, so Hill-Murray Theatre was a natural choice for me. I love knowing that after school, I will be going to do something I love with my friends. HMStudents4Change is a group of people who are passionate about helping to create and foster change in the Hill-Murray community. Student Council gives me an opportunity to use my voice for creating new and fun ideas for the student body and collaborating with others to achieve these plans.

Finally, what does finding your calling mean to you?

Finding your calling does not just mean finding what your future career will be. Finding your calling means finding what you love to do. Everyone has their own unique gifts, and we all can use these gifts to help better the world. Hill-Murray gives me an outlet for both finding and exploring my gifts and passions. I have always been passionate about arts and STEM, but I have gotten to really dive into what I can do within these fields at Hill-Murray.
