Building on What Matters Most

Dear Hill-Murray Community,

As we look ahead to the future of Hill-Murray, we are beginning the important work of shaping our next Strategic Plan. Over the past several months, we have been listening closely to students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, trustees, and friends of the school, asking honest questions about who we are, what we value most, where we are thriving, and where we need to grow.

Grounded in our Catholic tradition, this process is not simply about creating another strategic document or checking a box. It is about discernment. It is about understanding how Hill-Murray can continue to form young people with a true north rooted in Christ while navigating a world that is changing rapidly around them.

There is much to celebrate at Hill-Murray. And there is important work ahead of us.

Through surveys, interviews, and conversations, one theme emerged again and again: relationships remain the heart of this school. Parents spoke about teachers who changed the trajectory of their child’s life. Alumni reflected on mentors they still think about years later. Students talked about finding confidence, discovering their gifts, and feeling seen here. Faculty and staff spoke passionately about a mission that continues to call them to this work every day, even when the work itself is demanding.

In fact, every stakeholder group identified our teachers and our student-centered culture as Hill-Murray’s greatest strength. One alum said it simply: “Nothing motivates a kid more than connecting with a teacher.” That feels deeply true to me.

At the same time, the feedback also reminded us that we cannot afford to become complacent.

Families are asking important questions about innovation, technology, affordability, rigor, and the future of education itself. Students want learning experiences that feel meaningful, relevant, and authentic. Faculty and staff are asking for clarity, alignment, and support as expectations continue to grow. And, like every Catholic school today, we are operating in an increasingly complex environment.

The feedback also made something else very clear: Individuals want Hill-Murray to be more intentional and clearer about who we are.

Hill-Murray is not called to chase every trend or reinvent itself every few years. But we are also not called to stand still and assume what worked yesterday will automatically work tomorrow. Strong schools honor tradition while still having the courage to adapt, improve, and respond to the needs of the students in front of them.

Our Catholic faith tradition reminds us that education is about the whole person: mind, body, and spirit. It is about rigor and compassion. Accountability and belonging. Faith and purpose. Excellence and humility. And frankly, holding those tensions well is not always easy. But that is the work.

One of the things I appreciated most about this process is that even the critiques came from a place of care. People care deeply about Hill-Murray. They want this school to thrive. They want future generations of students to experience what so many others have experienced here: challenge, growth, faith, friendship, and transformation.

In the Rule of St. Benedict, we are reminded to “listen with the ear of the heart.” That has guided this process from the very beginning. We are listening carefully to our students, families, faculty, alumni, and community because Hill-Murray’s future will be strongest when it is shaped together.

What gives me confidence in what comes next is not the illusion that everything here is perfect. It is not. What gives me confidence is the certainty that this community is built on something strong enough to withstand challenges, adapt with purpose, and keep moving forward together.

Built on the mission that grounds us. The relationships that sustain us. The deep commitment to students. And the unwavering belief that every child deserves to be known, loved, and respected.

That is the heart of Hill-Murray.

And that is worth protecting, strengthening, and building upon for generations to come.

As we continue this important work together, I am reminded that Hill-Murray’s greatest strength has always been its people. I hope you will join us on June 11 from 5-9 for our Party on the Plaza. The evening will be full of fellowship, gratitude, and celebration as we reconnect with alumni, former parents and grandparents, faculty, staff, coaches, and friends of the school. The relationships that define this community are worth celebrating, and I look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely,
