Moments of Joy This Advent Season
Dear Hill-Murray Community,
Growing up, I remember wondering why the Advent wreath candles weren’t red and green, I didn’t understand the true meaning behind the purple and pink. Knowing now that the pink candle represents joy, it makes perfect sense to me as we get closer to Christmas Day. In the midst of busy schedules, activities, and year-end deadlines, Christmas reminds us to refocus on what truly matters: our faith, our relationships, how we care for one another, and finding moments of peace and joy.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve seen these values lived out in so many meaningful ways. I see them in the daily commitment of our faculty and staff, in the generosity and sacrifice of our families and supporters who believe deeply in a Hill-Murray education. What is most gratifying is to see the kindness, leadership, and energy our students bring to campus each day.
I’m especially thankful that we can create and celebrate moments of joy and connection, from Christmas karaoke on the PA to the always-entertaining Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest. This year’s winner, a 6th grader, even added some homemade touches to her sweater. Those moments of laughter and shared fun remind us how important it is to enjoy being together. As a Catholic school, it is such a gift to be able to freely celebrate Christmas during the school day. The Student Council has provided excellent leadership in planning and sponsoring “Christmas Week”. I love their energy and willingness to organize such a fun week!
Our faith has also been very present on campus. The beautiful handmade crèche at the front of our school, created by a Hill-Murray alum, is a simple and powerful reminder of what is at the heart of this season. The front entry shouts joy and celebration, thanks to our amazing Mother’s Club, who put in the hard work to create such a beautiful Christmas welcome to our school.

I’m also reminded of Christ’s presence when alumni return to campus, to stop by to visit Judy Schwartz, and share stories about their time at Hill-Murray. Their continued connection speaks volumes about the lasting impact this community has on its members long after graduation. All of these moments, both big and small, are signs of Christ’s love at work in our school.
As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, may His message of peace and love renew our hearts and strengthen our commitment to one another. I hope this Christmas season brings you rest, joy, and meaningful time with those you love.
As we look ahead to the new year, I also invite you to help us welcome future Pioneers by sharing the invitation to join us at our January Open House.
On behalf of Hill-Murray, I wish you a blessed and joyful Christmas,
