Faith & Service

At Hill-Murray, we encourage students to hear and respond to the voice of God in their lives. In the rich tradition of our Catholic faith and in line with our Benedictine and Lasallian traditions and charisms (spiritual gifts), we encourage each of our students in an authentic walk of faith regardless of their background. We recognize the call of Jesus for each of us to be servant leaders and to be “good news” to the world. We fulfill this call by putting our God-given gifts to use in service to others.

Service Requirements

requirement

There are two Service experiences required each year for students in grades 9-12. The word “requirement” means Service "experience" - it does not mean Service "hours." A Service experience could last 2 hours, but students get credit for attending the one experience, not for the number of hours they were there.

One Service requirement can be general Service - such as helping around the school, at a parish, etc. But, it can not be a project for which a student is paid to do the service.

The other Service requirement must include serving the poor and vulnerable - such as the sick, elderly, physically or mentally challenged, etc. You can complete both service requirements by doing two experiences with the poor and vulnerable.

Service opportunities are available through the Service Website Portal. Service opportunities are offered at various times to fit busy schedules.

Service website portal

In an effort to increase student accessibility to events, and also keep parents and guardians informed about the projects their students are doing, the Hill-Murray has developed a website portal for students to manage their service and volunteering experience.

Special thanks to Hill-Murray senior, Marcus Anderson, who worked closely with the Technology office over the summer to design this system.

Reflection Forms
In order to receive credit for a Service experience, students must submit a reflection form. All Service reflection forms must be submitted electronically through the service website portal.

Permission Slips

All Service permission slips must be submitted electronically . Each student must have an electronic permission slip submitted to Campus Ministry before they can participate in any Service experiences.

Service awards

Each year, but many of our students go above and beyond when it comes to service and volunteering. In order to recognize students for their hard work and dedication, our Service award levels have been expanded to include: Diamond, Platinum, and the Presidential Award.

Each student has an opportunity to earn a service award. And service awards accumulate each year.

20 Experiences = Bronze Service Award
30 Experiences = Silver Service Award
40 Experiences = Gold Service Award
60 Experiences = Diamond Award
80 Experiences = Platinum Award
100 Experiences = Presidential Award
200 Experiences = Pioneer Award

Sacramental Celebration / Prayer Services

All-school Mass and Prayer services are an important part of the Hill-Murray experience. We gather regularly as a school community for vibrant worship lead by our Chaplain and Peer Ministers.

Prayer experiences are designed to reach our students where they are and give them a sense of communion with God and with one another. Our worship schedule reflects the Liturgical calendar, giving our students opportunities to receive the sacraments and experience the seasons of the Church.

We invite parents, friends and broader the Hill-Murray community to join us at any of our Masses.

Retreats

Hill-Murray students have a unique opportunity to go on retreats, setting time aside to encounter the Lord in a deeper way, grow in faith and grow in our desire to serve our neighbor. Retreats typically include the celebration of Mass, songs of praise and worship, reflections and guided discussions from the Campus Ministry team, team-building exercises and small group discussions led by Peer Ministers.

Each grade goes on one retreat during the school year, and there are additional options during the summer for Peer Ministers, the Service team, and other groups.

Prayers of Intention

We invite you to submit a prayer request on behalf of someone who needs help or is hurting. Their name will be added to the prayer book in the Hill-Murray Chapel.
