STEM 1 Classes Visit Maple Tree Monastery Childcare Center

STEM I classes once again visited Maple Tree Monastery Childcare Center to bring our much-anticipated Cardboard Carnival to life. By perfect timing, we joined the preschoolers during their Snow Glow festival, where black lights and neon colors transformed the space into a fully immersive carnival experience. The preschoolers’ faces were filled with joy as their treat bags overflowed with prizes. Our middle school students had an absolute blast running their games, interacting with the younger students, and seeing their hard work pay off. It was truly a memorable experience and without a doubt one of the highlights of the semester.
47 Students Advanced to the DECA State Competition

As we enter into a new year and return from a long break, it is a great opportunity to do a quick check in with your student. Having intentional conversations around the following topics can continue to set your student up for success:
- Routine Check:
- What are some things that help you get back on schedule (alarms, prep the night before, sleep, etc.)
- What are things you are doing that are supporting you and maybe, what are something things that could use an adjustment
- Goal Setting:
- Think about goals as you start the New Year and are close to the new semester
- 1 goal you have related to yourself (personal goal)
- 1 goal you have related to school (academic goal)
- How are you going to work toward those goals, what supports do you need?
- Reminder of Supports:
- Out of school:
- Family
- Friends
- Other trusted adults
- In school
- WIN Time
- PioPeriod
- Adults in the Building (teachers, counselors, etc.)
- Out of school:
When we have these conversations and say our needs, goals, supports, etc. out loud it can help remind us of them. Writing goals down in a place you see can also be a great reminder and way to continue taking steps toward what you hope to accomplish!

Ways to Help Build Emotional Resilience in Young People
Emotional resilience is key to overall well-being. Consider the following list and what conversations and actions it can lead to. If you would like to talk to your child’s counselor, please reach out to Mrs. Valentine (Grades 6 and 7) at 651-748-2224 | lvalentine@hill-murray.org or Ms. Francis (Grade 8) at 651-748-2235 | kfrancis@hill-murray.org.
1. Encourage healthy risk-taking – Gently push young people from their comfort zones through activities that won’t cause harm if they are unsuccessful. (Parents may also experience some discomfort. Gently prevent yourself from stepping back in too soon.)
2. Resist the urge to fix the issue and ask questions instead – When we see loved ones hurting, our first instinct is to fix the issue. However, when teaching children emotional resilience, a better approach is to ask thought-provoking questions. Asking questions stimulates self-awareness, allowing students to work through problems logically.
3. Help young people label their emotions – Adolescents can experience a flood of emotions during stressful events. To support stress resilience, help students label their emotions and remind them that even difficult feelings are completely normal and will pass in time.
4. Demonstrate and model coping skills – Emotional turmoil represents an internal conflict of emotions, which can be alleviated through outward actions, reducing overall stress. In order for students to engage in stress-reducing activities, you have to teach coping strategies.
Healthy coping strategies include taking deep breaths, stretching, exercising, and meditating. These coping skills help students remain calm when they experience stress or frustration, allowing them to view situations clearly.
5. Help youth not to be afraid of making mistakes – Teaching students to embrace mistakes and learning from them creates a growth mindset. Discuss making mistakes and how to bounce back from them. Resilience today leads to greater success tomorrow!
6. Get outside – The best advice anyone can give to prevent stress disorders, anxiety, and depression while enhancing mental health is to spend time outdoors. Getting outside exposes children to sunlight, which activates vitamin D, an essential chemical for mood stabilization. Fresh air also stimulates stress-relieving hormones, and physical activity, such as sports, produces endorphins, reduces cortisol, and provides a healthy outlet for negative emotions.
