announcement: Athletic & Activities Director Retirement & Replacement

October 25, 2018 (Maplewood, MN) – Hill-Murray School announced today that Bill Lechner, who has been a teacher and administrative leader of the school since 1979, will retire as Athletic Director at the end of this school year.

Mr. Lechner is only stepping down from the AD role, he will continue as the Varsity Boys Hockey Head Coach.

During Mr. Lechner’s 40-year tenure, the school has expanded its sports and co-curricular offerings, built a new stadium, a new fieldhouse and funded improvements at Aldrich Ice Arena. He was the Assistant Football Coach for 10 years, Head Baseball Coach for 18 years and he led his teams to multiple conference and state appearances.

Hill-Murray School President, James Hansen said, “While most admire Bill Lechner for his legacy as a hockey and baseball coach, those of us who know him best admire him for his dedication to helping build students of character. We are most grateful for his staunch support and execution of the school’s vision by developing emotional intelligence skills in our students through their participation in over 40 clubs, 21 varsity sports and a total of 56 teams at all levels. Most recently, we applaud his work to expand into innovative offerings that have kept the program relevant and respected.”

Hill-Murray teacher and former professional hockey player, John Pohl will replace Mr. Lechner. He is a graduate of Red Wing High School where he was a member of the National Honor Society, earned 9 varsity letters and was named Mr. Hockey in 1998.

Mr. Pohl played hockey for four years at the University of Minnesota, was captain for two seasons, three times earned Academic All-Big Ten honors, and as a member of the 2002 National Championship team, he was named an All American. He was an NHL draft pick in 1998 and played 8 years professionally.

He has been an educator since 2010 and has been recognized as a Teacher of Excellence and was named Section Coach of the Year during his tenure as a High School Girls hockey coach.

He will be responsible for carrying on Mr. Lechner’s administrative duties relating to all school clubs, activities and all Hill-Murray athletic teams.

Mr. Pohl is married to former U.S. Olympian Krissy (Wendell) Pohl, they have three children and live in Woodbury.
