Theatre

2010-2011 Theatre Schedule

Hill-Murray theatre enjoys a well-chronicled reputation in the greater community as one of the finest programs in the state.  It is known for its professionalism, excellence, and outstanding programming.  Any student wishing to participate in a theatre experience is welcomed.  Over 200 students are involved each year in the theatre program, onstage and behind the scenes.  Students interested in developing their talent or just becoming involved in an exciting activity will find a home in Hill-Murray theatre!

The Theatre Season at Hill-Murray consists of five productions.  The Christmas show is usually a mixture of parents and students. The One-Act play produced in January is for the Minnesota State High School League sponsored contest. Hill-Murray's One-Act play has often won the Section championship and advanced to a starred rating at the state level. A special summer workshop for students who wish to sharpen their skills is conducted by outside professionals each summer.

Student Participation
Over the course of the coming school year nearly one out of every five students will participate in some way in a Theatre-related production. One of the school's top priorities to them, as they profit from this valuable experience, is that they maintain their academic performance. One comment often heard from parents is that students' grades actually improve while they are in shows because of the emphasis placed on time management and academics. The Theatre Department believes that if they can work closely and communicate in a timely fashion with teachers, parents, and students, there is time and energy available for both the academic and the cocurricular experiences at Hill-Murray, including an excellent experience in Theatre.

Fine Arts Mission Statement
The Fine Arts program at Hill-Murray School contributes to the development of the student as a whole person by:

Enabling students to grow in service to community, team building, and respect and responsibility for others.
  • Providing an opportunity for students to "stage" their talents and be "competitive" in a positive environment.
  • Allowing students access to learning not available in the classroom- building life-long appreciation for the works of art, music, and theatre.
  • Exposing students to the experience of the arts in practice and performance as they develop skills, confidence, poise, and critical abilities.
