Student Council

Leaders aren't born, they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work. And that's the price we'll have to pay to achieve that goal, or any other.

Season:
The Hill-Murray Student Council is a year-long commitment that begins after elections for freshmen and middle school students in the fall and upperclassman in the spring.  Current Student Council members meet throughout the summer for a retreat and Homecoming planning.  The season is ongoing and never really stops.  Throughout the year, there are times when it is extremely busy like Homecoming, Christmas, and Spring Fling weeks.

Who can join?
All students can run for election.  Six from each grade are chosen based on a popular vote and an interview.

Who is in charge?
The Student Council advisor is Regina Dow. The Student Council advisor is in charge, but the executive board really runs things.

Important info:
For perspective Student Council members and parents, it is a huge commitment.  Students are expected to be very involved in school functions.  Not only is active involvement a must at school functions, but also in preparing for them.

CLASS:
The Student Council members are able to excel at CLASS throughout the year.  They have to lead others by example in enthusiasm, energy, and Christian values.  Being on the Student Council also gives students the opportunity of honing lifelong learning skills.  Students prepare themselves to be future leaders, creative thinkers, and doers.  In addition to leading the school in many of our school functions, they have to pursue academic excellence by maintaining good grades and managing time.  Student Council members have the unique opportunity to grow spiritually and socially through leadership and example.  Spiritually, student council members need to always keep in mind, “What would Jesus do?”    Socially, members know the pulse of their class and convey that to the council.  They have the unique advantage of hosting dances, pep fests, coffeehouses, movie nights, etc…

Catholic Social Teachings:
Student Council members have many opportunities to adhere to the Catholic Social Teaching principles.  Throughout the year, members demonstrate the dignity of the human person by being respectful, fair, and celebrating uniqueness.  Each time we host a pep fest, all-school picnic, etc…, we are striving for a sense of community and a common good.  The Service committee of the Student Council petitions for the rights and responsibility of the administration.  They propose solutions to problems and ways to make H-M a better place.  During Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the Blood Mobile, members help the poor and vulnerable.  Through committee work, Student Council members are asked to respect others contributions and creativity.  The Student Council is the epitome of solidarity.  We have to work together as a group on so many activities that it is imperative that we respect each other.  Caring for God’s Creation is done through our proposals to improve our community.

School Improvement Plan (SIP):
Student Council members also have many opportunities improve their oral presentation skills.  Student Council members must prepare morning announcements occasionally, speak to homerooms about up-coming events, prepare speeches for class meetings, and emcee pep fests, coffeehouses, and other events.
