“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”
― Thomas Merton
The Fine Arts department is staffed by teachers and directors dedicated to helping their students find and express their artistic gifts and talents. The Hill-Murray community is vibrant in their love and support for the fine arts. All Hill-Murray students are encouraged to become well-rounded through participation in art, band, choir, speech, or theatre.
Hill-Murray Theatre continues to garner awards for its dramatic and musical productions and is directed by an Ivey-Award winning actor, who is also a professional choreographer and director. Our theatre department produces a fall play, Christmas Show, One-Act and an annual spring musical.
Hill-Murray’s artistic excellence is continued through vocal and choral opportunities. Lead by local performer, Hill-Murray choirs sing a diverse repertoire exploring cultures, styles and languages.
Our talented and dedicated band directors have led their students to claim some of the highest individual and ensemble awards. The students are encouraged to share their musicial talents and serve the school and greater community through music. Professional musicians are brought in to share their knowledge and inspire our students. We encourage our students to explore music as they seek ways to honor and glorify God.
Our studio art instructors provide an environment which offers challenges to all students, builds on individual differences, and provides means by which students may express themselves and develop positive self concepts. Our program offers opportunities for students to develop their skills and knowledge to use art in their careers and in their personal lives. Students have opportunities to connect with art galleries outside of school along with participating in our Annual All-School Art Show each Spring.
The instrumental music department is building an orchestra program at Hill-Murray. All string players are invited to play and perform in our comingled band/string classes until we have viable numbers to have a separate orchestra course offering. The department is staffed by specialists and professional performers giving students the attention and instruction needed to be successful musicians. Students are coached in small groups via sectionals and an after-school private lesson program provides further individualized instruction and advancement of string techniques.
The Academy for the Performing Arts is a program of superior artistic study taught by accomplished professional musicians after-school in the music department at Hill-Murray. All are welcome; one does not have to be a Hill-Murray student to enroll in the Academy. The Academy for the Performing Arts offers lessons for guitar, bass, piano, drum set, all band instruments, all voices, jazz studies and improvisation. Lessons are tuition-based and charged based on the school quarters. Click the link above for more information.
