Amnesty International
Hill-Murray’s
“Amnesty International Club” is a student organization dedicated to
social-justice issues throughout the world.
Founded 5 years ago by two students whose vision of the club was to
provide awareness and opportunity for Hill-Murray students to work in the realm
of human rights, the “Amnesty International Club” now numbers over 100 students
in all grade levels of the school.
Members of this club have been active in direct service to and advocacy
for the homeless, in educational and advocacy programs concerning civil war and
genocide throughout the world, and in imparting their knowledge to the greater
student body.
This
year, the “Amnesty International Club” will again host “Human Rights Awareness
Week.” Throughout the week of November
14-18, the club will welcome speakers whose presentations will cover topics
ranging from torture to refugees, journalistic advocacy for the poor and
vulnerable to homelessness, and transitional justice to genocide. The format of these presentations will be
“working lunches” in which both speakers and student attendees can investigate
these issues in an intimate setting.
Additionally,
the “Amnesty International Club” will continue to organize and lead service
opportunities directly relating to homelessness. Activities on the calendar this year will
again include participating in “The Homeless Memorial March” in December,
“Lobby Day, 2012” in February with the Minnesota Coalition for the Homeless”
and “Project Homeless Connect” in April.
Student
leaders for the “Amnesty International Club” are senior co-presidents Hannah
Smith and Taylor Mills. The faculty
advisor for this club is Timothy Cooper,
Department of Religious Studies. Please
feel free to contact any of these individuals if you would like to participate
in the “Amnesty International Club” this year.
All students are welcome to join.
